Sulabh Founder Bindeshwar Pathak Passes Away, PM Modi Tweets, “Profound loss for Nation”

Bindeshwar Pathak, the founder of Sulabh International and a notable social activist, passed away on Tuesday due to a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Delhi. Earlier in the morning on the same day, during the Independence Day celebrations, the 80-year-old had expressed discomfort and uneasiness.

The visionary individual, Bindeshwar Pathak, established Sulabh International, a renowned social organization dedicated to advancing human rights, environmental sanitation, waste management, and educational reforms. According to an aide, Pathak had the honour of hoisting the national flag during the morning Independence Day celebration, after which he experienced a sudden collapse. Following the incident, he was swiftly transported to AIIMS Delhi. A hospital insider confirmed that Pathak was declared brought dead at 1:42 pm.

In 1970, Bindeshwar Pathak established the Sulabh International Social Service Organization in Bihar. Since its inception, Pathak dedicated himself to transforming the prevailing unhygienic toilet practices prevalent among slum dwellers, rural communities, and urban residents. He ingeniously devised cost-effective toilet solutions that have substantially improved the quality of life and health for millions.

Pathak was also resolute in his efforts to eliminate the manual cleaning of human waste from bucket latrines in India. His innovative approach to sanitation spearheaded the conversion of dry latrines into two-pit pour flush latrines in 1749 towns, along with the construction of over 160,835 toilets. Furthermore, Bindeshwar Pathak received the honor of having a day named after him in New York. In the year 2016, Mayor Bill De Blasio officially designated April 14 as “Bindeshwar Pathak Day” in recognition of his remarkable contributions.
