Meghalaya has got an electric train for the first time. Actually, Indian Railways has completed the electrification of important sections between Abhayapuri-Pancharatna. The electrification of Dudhnai-Mendipathar will improve the speed of trains in North East India. Let us tell you that Indian Railways is moving forward with full force to become a net zero carbon emitter by 2030.

What is the plan of railway?

In pursuit of complete electrification, Northeast Frontier Railway has achieved another milestone by commissioning Dudhnai-Mendipathar (22.823 track km) single line section and Abhayapuri-Panchratna (34.59 track km). The Central Organization for Railway Electrification (CORE) has done the work of electrification in these sections.

Mendipathar is the only railway station in the north-eastern state of Meghalaya, which is operational since 2014 after being inaugurated by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. With the commissioning of electric traction, trains hauled by electric locomotives will now be able to operate directly from Mendipathar in Meghalaya. This will increase the average speed. More passenger and freight trains will speed up through these sections. There will be a reduction in the travel time on this section. Parcel and freight trains pulled by electric locomotives from other states will be able to reach Meghalaya directly.

these would be the advantages

According to the Ministry, with the beginning of this scheme or you can say that electrification will improve the mobility of trains in Northeast India. In addition to reducing pollution caused by switching from fossil fuels to electricity, the railway system in the region will also improve. This will facilitate uninterrupted traffic and besides saving precious foreign exchange, the time of trains to and from the North Eastern states will also be saved.

A day before this, Communications and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in the Lok Sabha that the country’s first Vande Bharat Express was started in 2019 between New Delhi and Varanasi. Presently, 10 pairs of Vande Bharat Express are in operation on the Indian Railways network. An amount of Rs 19479 crore has been provided by the Indian Railways in the Revised Estimates for the financial year 2022-2023 to make Vande Bharat trains under the PH 21-Rolling Stock Program (Carriage).
