Women boxers S Kalaivani (48kg), Shruti Yadav (70kg) and Monika (+81kg) won bronze medals in the Strandja Memorial tournament.
Govind had to face defeat in the final
New Delhi. Indian boxers Anamika (50kg), Anupama (81kg) and Govind Kumar Sahni (48kg) settled for silver medals after losing their respective final bouts at the Strandja Memorial Tournament on Sunday. Defending national champion Anamika went down in a split decision 1-4 against China’s Hui Meiyi in the lightweight final. Govind also had to face a 1-4 defeat against Shodiorjon Melikujeev of Uzbekistan in a tough match.
Anupama, on the other hand, was defeated by Australia’s Emma Sui Greentree by a unanimous decision of 5-0 on the basis of technical competence. Indian boxers won a total of eight medals including three silver and five bronze medals in the tournament. The match between Govind and 2023 Asian Under-22 Championship silver-winner Melikujeev saw both the players aggressive and both threw multiple punches to each other’s body.

Anamika tried in vain
Asian Championship 2022 bronze medalist Govind used his speed and fast punches but during this time he was lowering his guard, which was taken advantage of by the opposing boxer. Anamika started aggressively but could not penetrate Meiyi’s strong defence. The Chinese player won the first round with a unanimous decision. Anamika performed better in the second round than in the first round. Anamika was the better boxer in the last round. She threw several punches at the Chinese player and four out of five judges gave the decision in her favor but by then it was too late.
Anupama was under pressure from the beginning
In the light heavyweight final, Greentree did not allow Anupama to find her rhythm and dominated from the start to register an easy win. Given the huge difference between the two boxers, the result could have been predicted. Former Indian Boxing High Performance Director and now Australia’s national boxing team head coach Santiago Nieva could be seen celebrating Greentree’s victory. Three Indian women boxers S Kalaivani (48 kg), Shruti Yadav (70 kg) and Monika (+81 kg) won bronze medals. Bishwamitra Chongtham (51kg) and 2021 world youth champion Sachin (54kg) also ended their campaigns with bronze medals.
