Germany: ‘Utter nonsense’ – Berlin hits out at Boris Johnson after claims about war in Ukraine –

Berlin government on Wednesday slammed Boris Johnson after the former UK Prime Minister claimed Germany had initially wanted Ukraine to quickly ‘fold’ when Russia’s offensive started.

“That is ‘utter nonsense’ what Boris Johnson said. We know that the very entertaining former Prime Minister always has his own relationship with the truth,” said Steffen Hebestreit, German government spokesperson during a federal press briefing.

The remarks came after Johnson claimed in an interview Berlin had preferred a swift end to the war to avoid economic repercussions. “The German view was at one stage that if it were going to happen – which would be a disaster – then it would be better for the whole thing to be over quickly, and for Ukraine to fold,” Johnson had claimed while talking to CNN Portugal.

Moscow launched the military offensive in Ukraine earlier this year, after recognising the independence of the LPR and DPR.

Kiev condemned the action, while President Volodymyr Zelensky ordered martial law and full mobilisation in February.
